Office Dust Deposit Testing
Independent indoor air quality assessors · Since 1999
Office dust deposit testing measures material accumulating on desks, ledges and equipment over a defined period. It is useful when facilities teams need more than photographs or impressions of rapid resettling. We establish consistent collection areas, document cleaning and room use, and characterise selected samples where composition may distinguish fibres, skin fragments, soot-like particles, construction material or other debris. The programme links deposit patterns with filtration, accessible duct condition and activities without treating settled material as an airborne exposure result.

A measurement programme for recurring deposits
The scope begins with where material is noticed, how soon it returns, which surfaces are cleaned and whether the pattern changes by room, day or plant operation. We select comparable horizontal surfaces or prepared collection media and agree a deposition period. Photographs, surface area, exposure time and local activity are recorded. This creates a repeatable basis for comparing zones rather than relying on uneven housekeeping or subjective descriptions.
Characterising what has settled
Representative samples can be examined to describe the dominant material and support source hypotheses. Fibres may reflect furnishings, paper or textiles; skin fragments and general organic debris are common in occupied spaces; dark combustion-like particles may warrant investigation of outdoor ingress; mineral or plaster-like material can align with building works. Characterisation is interpreted cautiously because mixed office dust accumulates from several sources, and appearance alone rarely proves origin.
Connecting deposits with cleaning and occupancy
A deposition record only makes sense alongside housekeeping information. We document cleaning frequency, methods, access limitations and any areas routinely omitted. Occupancy, paper handling, floor finishes and local activities are noted. Comparison locations help show whether the issue is building-wide, concentrated near a source or related to surface position. This allows the report to distinguish rapid deposition after verified cleaning from longstanding material in difficult-to-reach areas.
Filtration, ductwork and filter bypass
Where the pattern suggests an air-distribution pathway, we review accessible filters, seals, housings, diffusers and nearby duct condition. Gaps around filters or damaged seals can allow bypass; unsuitable filter installation or unusual loading may justify HVAC contractor review. Deposit Thickness Testing may be appropriate where internal duct cleanliness is the question. We do not infer hidden-system condition from desk dust alone, and mechanical faults are referred for engineering diagnosis.
How the evidence is built
Map the pattern
Record affected surfaces, ventilation relationship, cleaning history and comparison rooms.
Set the collection period
Prepare or identify controlled surfaces and protect the integrity of the measurement.
Collect representative material
Use suitable sampling media and chain-of-custody records where analysis is commissioned.
Inspect plausible pathways
Review accessible filtration, diffusers, nearby works and room activities.
Compare and report
Relate deposition and composition to context, uncertainty and practical next checks.
When a reactive investigation is more suitable
A planned deposit programme is best when the aim is to quantify accumulation and compare areas under controlled conditions. Dust Complaint Investigation is the reactive route when a live complaint requires broader source triage, particulate logging, interviews or immediate inspection. Either service may lead to the other if initial evidence changes the question.
Is this the right page?
Use Office Dust Deposits for controlled settled-material measurement. Choose Dust Complaint Investigation for an active complaint requiring source triage, or Duct Cleanliness Testing when the primary concern is internal ventilation-system condition.
Limitations and what this assessment cannot tell you
Deposit testing describes material collected at defined surfaces and times.
- Settled material does not measure breathing-zone exposure
- Mixed dust composition may support but not prove a single source
- Cleaning consistency and disturbance affect deposition comparisons
- Desk deposits cannot establish concealed duct condition
- Mechanical correction, cleaning and fabric works are completed by appointed contractors
What the deposit report shows
- Complaint or management question and surface map
- Cleaning record, collection area and exposure period
- Photographic condition and comparative deposition results
- Sample characterisation and analytical caveats
- Filtration, diffuser and accessible pathway observations
- Source hypotheses ranked by supporting evidence
